Dealing With Change

When Life Takes Unexpected Turns

Life is full of changes, some of which we choose and others we don’t. Unexpected transitions can be deeply unsettling, and adjusting to sudden change is never easy. But we’re not alone in this struggle. In the Bible, we see stories of individuals facing overwhelming challenges, from Job on the extreme end to just uncertainty of what tomorrow holds. Jesus can help us meet each of them with compassion, understanding, and hope, showing us how to find peace amidst uncertainty because He feels things just like us.

Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.” (Hebrews 2:17)

Instead of fear or a sense of uncertainty, Jesus offers comfort in His relationship with us, so we can draw strength and hope from knowing we’re held in every situation by a loving Savior.

So, when motivation to move forward wanes or we feel directionless, embracing God’s purpose renews our strength. When we keep sight of God’s eternal purpose for us, no change can derail our journey toward a life filled with hope.

Reflect on these Bible verses to encourage you as you face the future.

1. “Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? ” (Psalm 56:8)
When we’re hurting, we may feel like God is distant or distracted, but He’s described here in a profoundly tender, engaged and intimate way. God cared about David’s heartache enough to notice and remember each tear, and He cares about our sorrows with the same gentle intensity. Your sorrow matters to God.

2. “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)
Difficult times can leave us feeling exposed and unprotected. However, God offers us security that isn’t dependent on our situation. This is not a promise that we’ll never experience pain; instead, he gives much deeper comfort than our circumstances can provide.

3. “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” (2 Cor. 1:3-4)
Not only do we have the companionship and comfort of the Holy Spirit in hard times, but we also have the chance to develop community with others.

4. “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” (Romans 5:3-5)

Hard times are often even harder when they feel pointless. But according to Paul, difficulties we face remind us that struggles can have a significant purpose.
Take heart friends. If you’re facing difficult changes, remember you don’t have to face them alone. God is with you and offer you strength to navigate this new chapter of your life.
