How it all started...
It was in the State of Rhode Island in 1780 that the Free Will Baptist Denomination was founded by Benjamin Randall. In the early 1800's a land grant was given by the government to the Kittles' family and they in turn deeded land to the people of the community for a school. In those days, religion and education went hand in hand, so in Kittles' Schoolhouse, near the northwest corner of Vernon Township, on September 19, 1857, Union Free Will Baptist Church was organized by Elder David C. Topping and Jordan Nye, with Charles Ball and Daniel Hartly as Deacons. John Bussey was Church Clerk, and Elder David C. Topping was the first Pastor.
Twenty-two additional members included: Martin Finney, Charles Call, William Downard, George Finney, Joseph Jenkins, Samual McClain, James Dunlap, William Stevens, Alexander Simmons, Edward Teatling, Washington Lair, Triphasa Finney, Lucindia Jenkins, Mary Lair, Ann Boren, Teltha Call, Harriett Call, and and Mary Teatling.
