Goodness Of God

Finding the Goodness of God

As the calendar turns once again, I’ve been thinking about what lies ahead in 2024 for my family and friends and for the world in general. It led me to consider that whatever the future brings, there is a certainty I can always rely on, the goodness of God. It’s my hope that you believe with all your heart in this important attribute of God. I am certain if you are a Christian and someone says to you, “Our God is a good God”, you’ll likely respond emphatically with “Amen” or the phrase “God is good, all the time; all the time, God is good”.

As believers, we can easily attribute our favorable circumstances to His goodness. We speak of being blessed and that our God is a good God who never changes. Or maybe you know in your mind He’s the giver of good and perfect gifts, yet you might not be certain He’ll be good to you in 2024 in every area of your life—health, family, relationships, finances.

Remember this - the serpent planted doubt in Eve’s mind, too. He made her question whether God had been good to her and had her best interest at heart. He said, “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:5). Satan tried to convince her to believe that God was holding out on her and not giving her something she needed - more knowledge. Maybe you feel as though God is blessing others, but isn’t answering your prayers. I know I sometimes do. Maybe you’re sometimes tempted to doubt His goodness is for you. When I feel this way, I must remind myself that my circumstances aren’t the barometer of God’s love and goodness—the cross is. He has shown how good He is by giving His only Son Jesus to die for our sins. We can’t rely on our changing circumstances or our feelings to measure the love He has for us. But day by day as we choose to trust Him more, we learn to believe with confidence that God is good—all the time. That way, I can see that the goodness of God doesn’t come and go with the seasons of my life. Then I can really know what it’s like to “taste and see that the Lord is good”? (Psalm 34:8)

So, here's a question: When was the last time you paused to ponder the goodness of God? Take a moment today from your busy schedule, find a quiet place, turn off your cell phone, and choose to purposefully set your mind on the things above rather than the things of this earth, which are passing away. When we do this, we begin to see God's character and His actions on behalf of His people in every situation. We discover a God who is infinitely good, and we can rejoice in every circumstance because we see ourselves as a recipient of His goodness through its greatest expression – the sacrifice of Christ Jesus.

Lord, thank you for your great love for us. In this new year, help me and those who read this to have a heart that seeks you and desires to see your goodness in all of life’s circumstances. Help me to trust in you even when I cannot see what you are doing. Help me more and more to see your goodness right in front of me – in things great and small. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
